Basement Waterproofing & Tanking

A wet basement doesn't have to stay that way. We install proven waterproofing systems that protect your cellar from water ingress and turn damp, unusable spaces into dry, habitable rooms.

Why Basements Suffer from Damp

Basements and cellars sit below ground level — surrounded by soil that can retain and channel water. During heavy rainfall, Essex's clay-heavy soils become saturated, raising the water table and increasing hydrostatic pressure against cellar walls. Water finds the smallest crack or join and forces its way in.

Many Colchester properties have Victorian or Edwardian cellars built with lime mortar and single-skin brick — materials never designed to resist sustained water pressure. Without modern waterproofing, leaks are inevitable.

Signs Your Basement Needs Waterproofing

  • Standing water or pools of water appearing in the cellar
  • Wet or damp walls, particularly after heavy rainfall
  • White efflorescence (salt deposits) on cellar walls
  • Musty or earthy smell rising from below
  • Rust staining from metal fixings or pipes in the wall
  • Damaged or rotting timber stored in the basement
  • Peeling paint or render on cellar walls

Waterproofing Systems We Install

Type A: Barrier Protection (Tanking)

A continuous waterproof coating or membrane is applied to all internal surfaces. Suitable for basements with low to moderate water pressure. We use cementitious or crystalline tanking slurry, applied to a prepared surface.

Type B: Structurally Integral Waterproofing

Used during construction or major renovation. Involves using waterproof concrete or membranes within the structure itself.

Type C: Cavity Drain Membrane Systems

Our most commonly recommended solution for existing basements. A studded cavity drain membrane is fixed to the walls and floor, creating a drainage void. Any water that penetrates is collected at the base and channelled to a sump pump, which removes it automatically. This system manages water rather than trying to resist it — making it the most reliable long-term solution.
